For me graffiti is a new name for a contemporary sub culture
which uses letters as the immediate center piece. In truth graffiti’s history may be the oldest
form of human expression starting with the evolution of languages traced back
to cave paintings, symbols, nature patterns relating to sacred and fractal
geometry as seen on the temple of Osiris to ancient Mesopotamian script etched in stone around 3000 B.C.E.From then till now language has had time to
mature into one of the most evolved expressions. People say a picture is worth
a thousand words but a word, symbol or letter can create a thousand pictures
depending upon its cultural consensus. What if you combine word and image? Can words enable
or box in perception? Graffiti is one of the only art forms that emphasize the letters,
or a marks spatial and proportional relationship to each other through a
multiplicity of visual expressions while deconstructing and constructing
perceptions of identity, ownership and authority.
